Improved dam safety for Karlskoga Vattenkraft with flood gates delivered by Maintpartner

A dam failure can have serious consequences for society. High water flows can endanger people and destroy important functions such as roads, electricity, telecommunications and water systems. It is also anticipated changes in the climate with more precipitation and higher water flows as a consequence, which requires that the high water flow is handled safely.

At hydropower plants, water flow is optimised using flood gates that occasionally need to be rebuilt or repaired to ensure good dam safety. A major renovation project may take several years - planning, environmental assessment, permit procedures and the renovation work take time.

The latest major project involving Maintpartner took place in Karlskoga, Sweden where the local energy company Karlskoga Vattenkraft carried out measures to improve the safety of the Skärjen and Herrhult dams. The dams were fitted with new flood gates in stainless steel and a whole new concrete dam was built. The completed renovation work provides better opportunities for regulating the flow of water and means that the dam has now been secured for a long time to come.

The work was started in November 2015 and completed at the end of 2017. Maintpartner was responsible for the mechanical and electrical installations. The work included dismantling of the old flood gates, manufacture and installation of new ones as well as related transports. Maintpartner’s delivery also included complete electrical and control equipment for the flood gates.

Karlskoga Vattenkraft expressed their satisfaction with the project.

“Maintpartner was one of the entrepreneurs in the project and delivered all ordered equipment in line with the agreed timetable. The atmosphere was good and the contacts required for a successful project functioned extremely well”, says Anders Johansson from Karlskoga Vattenkraft.

Maintpartner has manufactured flood gates of various materials for over ten years in Degerfors.

“We have a wide expertise in this area. We manufacture and repair flood gates made of different materials, such as stainless steel, duplex stainless steel and black steel. The advantage of, for example, duplex stainless steel is that the structure is lighter without the safety being affected”, says Mikael Hultgren, Service Manager at Maintpartner in Sweden.
