Maintpartner has upgraded the automation system for grinding and sorting the plywood boards at Koskisen Oy's production plant in Järvelä, southern Finland. Koskisen is a family-owned company, which has operated in the wood industry for 100 years and evolved into a wood industry expert.
The new automation system corrected the shortcomings of the old system and the end-of-life problems: increased failures that weakened the line's productivity, while the weak availability of spare parts for the equipment was not helping in the maintenance.
Maintpartner handled the upgrade as a complete delivery, with responsibility for all engineering, system programming, installation and system deployment as well as procurement of the electrical switchboard and control boxes. At the same time, the frequency converters and servo drives were also replaced with new ones.
Various system options were evaluated and a well-known, well-supported system with good integration capabilities was selected. Integration provides benefits both in application engineering and later in system maintenance and troubleshooting. Control and junction boxes were manufactured and also the system testing was done in advance.
This comprehensive project was carried out at the plant during the production’s summer break, and production with the new system started on schedule. At the end of the year, a few more development projects were implemented where the line operations were altered according to the development ideas received from the operators. The new line automation is now fully tailored to meet the needs.
“Cooperation in the project went well and on schedule. Maintpartner was chosen as a supplier when we searched for a partner in our electrical and automation renovation projects. We are pleased with the project management and the end-result, so hopefully our cooperation will continue,” says Jarmo Määttänen, Maintenance Manager at Koskisen Oy.
“When the schedule for the entire project is about six months, it is possible to invest in planning and testing in advance. Then four weeks will be enough to carry out the renovation at the plant,” says Janne Laitinen, Maintpartner's team leader for the electrical and automation engineering.
At Maintpartner, twenty people in Finland serve in industrial electrical and automation engineering. Other engineering services include layout, steel construction and process engineering.
